Local Anesthesia only Instruction
- It is not necessary to change your diet in preparation for “numbing shots” only. Continue medications as you normally would. If you have diabetes or are taking any blood thinners please let us know in advance so we can schedule your surgery accordingly
Sedation (Intravenous-IV) Instructions
Simple, But Important
- Arrange the appropriate time off from work or school
You’ll need a day or more to rest and begin healing. - Inform the surgeon of any medications you’re taking
Especially if anything has changed since your first appointment visit. - Follow the surgeon’s instructions about food
You will be advised to completely avoid eating and drinking (including water) for at least 6 hours prior to surgery. If you are dependent upon any daily oral medications we generally want you to continue these with only very small sips of water – Please call us if you have any questions regarding this. - Arrange to have an adult with you
YOU MUST Bring someone who can remain on hand during your surgery and drive you home afterwards. Patients are not to drive a vehicle or operate any machinery for 24 hours following anesthesia sedation. - Take your prescriptions
If you’ve been instructed to take antibiotics or other oral meds, they should be taken the day of the surgery with small sips of water. - No smoking
Stop at least 12 hours before surgery. Ideally, cut down or stop smoking as soon as possible prior to the day of surgery. - Wear loose-fitted clothing
Choose low-heeled shoes and a shirt with short sleeves, or sleeves that can be easily rolled up above the elbow, for administering an intravenous (IV) line. - Let us know if you’re not feeling 100%
If, on the day of your surgery, you’re suffering a fever, cold, sore throat, digestive upset or some other illness, please notify the office. It is nearly always better to simply re-schedule in this case. - Remove nail polish or acrylic nails from your index fingers
This is important to allow us to monitor your oxygen while you are sedated
