Dr. Coates and Dr. DeWitt are specially trained in the administration of anesthesia to help provide for a a stress-free experience. It not only makes the surgical process easier, but minimizing anxiety also improves the patient’s outlook toward achieving optimum results.
The type of anesthesia you receive will depend on your doctors recommendation and your preference. Your insurance coverage might also be a factor. If you’ve had any problems with anesthesia in the past, it’s very important to please let us know.
Local Anesthetic
“Numbing shots” are given to the area to be operated on. This simply numbs the mouth, jaw and/or face around the surgical area. Many of the procedures we perform can be done under local anesthesia only. Local anesthetic is also given if you are sedated, although it is placed after you have been adequately sedated.
Sedative
Sedatives, such as the most commonly known nitrous oxide (“laughing gas”), help you stay relaxed, but awake, during surgery. Nitrous oxide is inhaled, while other similar sedatives might be administered in a pill form.
IV / General Anesthesia
This type of anesthesia is what most patients associate with surgery performed in a hospital or similar medical environment. We are certified and heavily trained to safely provide sedation or general anesthesia in our office. General anesthesia is a state of complete unconsciousness that is generally recommend for difficult surgeries such as wisdom teeth removal. Medications are given through the intravenous (IV) route. We can tailor your anesthetic treatment plan to meet your overall health picture and your specific surgical needs. We provide this service for our pediatric, adult, and geriatric patients multiple times a day literally every day of the week.
